Handmade grades are produced traditionally: seedlac is filled into a long, narrow cloth bag and held in front of a charcoal oven to melt the lac, which is scraped, mixed thoroughly and transferred onto a smooth porcelain cylinder. Machine-made grades are processed using modern, automated heat-process techniques for standardized batch-to-batch quality.
Parameters vary somewhat by grade; ash and bleach indices are agreed per buyer-seller contract.
